Dialogue with Franz Kafka
Illustrations for three stories by Franz Kafka: "The Castle", "The Trial", and "Metamorphosis".
The series has 10 images – 8 black-and-white drawings, 1 color drawing, and 1 mixed media drawing on a black background.
Series title: "Dialogue with Kafka," because the images tie the plot of the stories to personal experiences related to "ordinary" life in a bureaucratic, anonymous, and invisible regime of oppression, when you don't know who is friend and who is enemy. The feeling of loneliness and lack of answers beset the person searching for justice, truth, and human warmth. In his search, he encounters the extreme embodiments of power (the castle), conformism, gossip, and narrow-mindedness (the trial), up to the total absence of human identity (the metamorphosis). The stories are seemingly fantasies, but they are a condensed mirror of dystopian human society.
